Oblique House

Carbondale, Colorado
with Studio B

This home is situated next to the Roaring Fork River outside of Carbondale, Colorado, adjacent to farm and ranchland. Responding to its riparian environment, the single-story house stretches along the river's edge, and the floor plan geometry incorporates an oblique angle to respond to a bend in the river. Vehicular arrival and entry are from the north, opposite the river; a low wall stretching eastward separates the driveway from outdoor play spaces for the owner's children. The north side of the property also accommodates various types of gardens—a combination of ornamental gardens and protected vegetable plots that provide ingredients for the kitchen and relate to the farmland beyond. The south side of the house, adjacent to the river, is given over to natural grasses and wetlands flora; outdoor hardwood decks on this side of the house allow the indoor spaces to flow outward, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior.

The house consists of two wings; a north wing, parallel to the driveway, provides space for the garage and mudroom entry, dining room, kitchen, formal entry, and primary bedroom suite. The south wing is rotated according to the bend in the river and provides space for the living room, media room, children's bedrooms, and other service spaces. Nestled into the gap between the north and south wings is an outdoor covered cooking and dining space; facing east, this space is protected from northwesterly winds blowing in from the valley and provides morning sunlight into the kitchen. The large kitchen island acts as a central hub from which point all of the children's areas, including the outdoor play space, can be viewed simultaneously, a primary requirement of the program that the owners established at the beginning of the design process. Extensive window walls along the south side of the building allow each room to be directly connected to the water through site and sound. Custom steel window awnings are designed to provide cooling shade in the warm summer months but allow warming sunlight to enter rooms during the winter season.

In addition to the steel awnings, the exterior façade consists of cement-fiber panels applied as a rainscreen; the various colors of the panels reflect the variegated natural tones in the surrounding landscape. Rising above the one-story structure are a series of roof monitors that contain north-facing clerestories which provide additional natural light to interior spaces below and reveal an intricate, wooden truss roof structure.
